Special Diets: Diabetic Diet
The diet should always form the basis of any diabetic treatment regimen, whether or not you are on medication.
Here are a few easy-to-follow dietary guidelines which will ensure that maximum benefit is derived from the medication that has been prescribed for you.
Avoid
- Foods containing simple sugars e.g. sweets and cookies
- Pastries
- Excessive intake of the sweetener sorbitol
Where possible sorbitol must be replaced with Zylitol or Stevia.
- Freshly baked products e.g. muffins, cakes, bread etc.
- Certain fruits e.g. pineapples, citrus fruit juice and water melon
- Carbonated (gassy) drinks
Increase
Foods rich in high complex carbohydrates e.g. sweet potatoes and rice.
Follow A Low GI diet.
