Cell phone and general EMF radiation – how bad is it really?

What are EMFs?

Radiation emits by the sun, electric power lines, electric appliances, smart devices, cell phones and tablets all fall under the umbrella of EMF`s.

Types of EMF exposure

  • High-frequency EMFs. This is the ionizing type of radiation. Scientific literature agrees that large exposures can damage DNA or cells. Medical devices like X-ray machines and CT scans produce low levels of this type of radiation. Other sources: gamma radiation from radioactive elements and UV radiation from either tanning beds or the sun.
  • Low- to mid-frequency EMFs. This is a non-ionizing type of radiation. Household appliances like microwave ovens, cellphones, hair dryers, and washing machines, power lines and MRIs, produce this type of radiation. This category includes extremely low frequency EMFs (ELF-EMFs) and radiofrequency EMFs (RF-EMFs).
  • Non-ionizing EMFs come from both natural and human-made sources. The earth’s magnetic field is a natural EMF. Human-made EMFs are classified into two types, both generated by non-ionizing radiation:
  • Extremely low-frequency EMFs (ELF-EMFs). This non-ionizing radiation field can be generated by a variety of sources: power lines, electrical wiring, and personal appliances like electric shavers, hair dryers, and electric blankets.
  • Radiofrequency radiation. This non-ionizing radiation field is emitted from wireless devices, like cell phones, smart meters, tablets, laptop computers, radio and television signals, radar, satellite stations, and MRI machines.

Sources of radiation

  • Non-ionizing radiation
  • Microwave ovens
  • Computers
  • Smart meters
  • Wi-Fi routers
  • Cellphones
  • Bluetooth devices
  • Oower lines
  • MRI machines
  • Ionizing radiation
  • Ultraviolet light (UV) radiation
  • X-rays and gamma rays

 EMF Side Effects

  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia
  • Headache
  • Depression and depressive symptoms
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Dysesthesia (a painful, often itchy sensation)
  • Lack of concentration
  • Changes in memory
  • Dizziness
  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Restlessness and anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Skin burning and tingling
  • Reduction in bone density
  • Hormone disrupter: reduce in fertility rates
  • Affect the Immune system
  • Lower anti-oxidant levels

Please note that all the above symptoms can be amplified in children.

How to minimise EMF exposure

  • Remember to turn off additional transmissions when not in use (bluetooth, wifi, etc).
  • When you sleep at night, don’t leave your phone next to your head, or up against your body and don’t keep it under your pillow.  A good idea to use airplane mode at night.
  • Pregnant women should always keep the phone away from their tummy.
  • Use earbuds, headsets, or the speaker when talking.
  • Swop sides of the head when talking on the cell phone.
  • Take breaks and go to places where there is no cell phone reception – get off the grid.
  • Limit the screen time for kids.  Aim for a 5-1 ratio of play to modern technology.
  • Add an EMF protector to your cell phone and all electric / electronic devices.
  • Always put your phone on airplane mode when it is in your pocket or against your body if you don’t have an emf protector on your phone.
